HOUSEBREAKING TIPS………………..
We always suggest that you start with the puppy in the crate right next to your bed at
night. Usually the puppy will cry a little when you first put him in, but should settle
down to sleep. If he wakes up in the middle of the night, put your hand next to the
kennel, and he may just go back to sleep as long as he knows you are right there. If he
does not, he may need to go potty.
First---when you take your new puppy out side to go potty, take him ON LEASH to an
area that YOU wish him to use. This will keep your yard clean and clean up easier. If
the puppy does not go, when you give the command “go Potty’’ then you may need to
place his scent ( some poo) in that area.
This is the routine we suggest--
A X-LARGE DOG KENNEL (OPEN AIR) OR AN EXERCISE PEN IS
RECOMMENDED TO KEEP THE PUPPY CONTAINED WHEN EVER YOU ARE
NOT ABLE TO WATCH THE PUPPY. IT IS LIKE A PLAY PEN FOR A TODDLER.
THIS WILL KEEP THEM SAFE AND OUT OF MISCHIEF.
IF LEFT FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME -WE RECOMMEND THAT THE
LITTER BOX USE IS CONTINUED, TO KEEP THEIR AREA CLEAN. WE USE
PINE PELLETS AND A LARGE CAT LITTER BOX OR LOW SIDE PAN--DO NOT
USE CAT LITTER !
--first thing in the morning--take puppy IMMEDIATELY OUT SIDE--CARRY HIM!
--give puppy breakfast (put food out for 10-15min , then take up)--take puppy outside
again with in 15min after eating.
--REPEAT for LUNCH time if able.
--give the puppy his dinner not later than 6pm (don't leave food down for more that 15-
20 min.--take up what ever he has not eaten)
--leave water out all day, until about 2 hrs before you put him to bed
--about 1/2 hr before bed time give him water and if possible a good active playtime.
After a puppy has played hard for about a half to an hour--they will go right to sleep in
their kennel
--Make sure he gets to go potty -and be sure he goes--before you put him to bed
--give him a nice warm thick blanket to sleep with
--If puppy is very small an animal safe heating pad may be needed--small puppies can
get chilled easily.
--Don't make him stay in his kennel more than 8 hrs at night. BE SURE CRATE IS
ALWAYS LARGE ENOUGH THAT THE PUPPY CAN STAND WITH 2”
CLEARANCE ABOVE HIS HEAD--KEEPING A PUPPY IN A KENNEL TOO
SMALL CAN EFFECT THE GROWTH OF YOUR PUPPY! NEVER OVER USE THE
KENNEL--IT IS A GREAT TRAINING AID BUT NOT MEANT FOR USE MORE
THAN 8 HOURS IN THE EVENING AND SHORT PERIODS OF TIME DURING
THE DAY.
--when he wakes up, carry him outside side--the first thing he will want to go is potty--
and may want to stop along the way.
--Routine is VERY important! Never allow the puppy to run the entire house until, fully
house broke.
--Keep the puppy in the same room as you when you can watch them, if you do not have
the time put him in an exercise pen or in his kennel for a nap.
--if you pup goes potty on the floor, it is important to clean the spot with a good product
like “Natures Miracle” to completely eliminate the smell to the dog.
--Remember--all the same rules apply to the puppy as a toddler when it come to bed
time,
try to give him shorter nap times in his kennel during the day--it will help him to be more
content at night.
